Mindfulness is a big part of my life for more than 15 years now. I don’t spend any time on a meditation cushion — I simply apply mindfulness in everything I do during the day. This way practising mindfulness doesn’t demand any extra time, while I still get to use each and every potentially stressful situation to ground myself and remain calm and focussed.

The beauty of this hands-on approach is that the number of stressful situations in my life has drastically dropped since I started to apply everyday-mindfulness.

Before mindfulness my life was a never-ending drama filled with setbacks, conflicts and bitter disappointments. I was suffering from severe depression, a serious thyroid disorder, burnout and zero self-confidence.

When I was 37 and feeling so low that I couldn’t possibly sink any lower, mindfulness came into my life. It opened my eyes and helped me see that I was the one causing all this drama (and not the circumstances in the outside world). Within a few weeks I was able to let go of that inefficient mindset and started to make incredibly profound changes.

My life has changed beyond recognition: I’m no longer obsessed with my own interests, but instead help and support the wellbeing of others. It’s a radically different approach which not only makes me utterly happy and fulfilled, but has also given me back my own health. I have never been depressed anymore and all my physical ailments have disappeared too.

And this is how you practise: in your own way

Karma Kickstart’s set-up encourages you to pick any exercise and practise it during the day. You can follow the logical order of the exercises in the book. Sticking to the sequence of the programme helps you to develop, then anchor the habit of everyday-mindfulness. But you’ll also notice that each exercise can be practised randomly whenever you feel like it.

Allow three days for each exercise. After the third day, you let go of that particular exercise and move on to the next one. Don’t stack the exercises, but allow yourself time to try and apply each exercise on its own. This way you simply move through the entire sequence of exercises. Once you have tried and practised all 20 exercises, you choose to continue practising those that give a good result so that you can always rely on these practical mindfulness exercises to support you in challenging situations.
